I got an email forward the other day. Ive gotten it before, but this time it really got me thinking. Check the fwd text out below, along with my commentary and additional comments.

"Proud To Be White

Someone finally said it.

How many are actually paying attention to this???

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Native Americans, etc. And then there are just - Americans! Gee, maybe thats because these people have immigrated here and become US citizens? But they were still born in another country, or their family was. Maybe its because if someone with dark skin or an accent says they are
'American' we shoot them crap. Just a thought.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Hispanic History Month. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Asian History Month. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Kawanza. You have the NAACP. And you have BET. God-forbid we celebrate our heritage. We are obviously taking the whole 'mixing pot' description too far! Every person deserves to learn about and celebrate their culture, and to learn about others. Diversity is supposed to be what makes this country so wonderful.

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists. Ok.... somewhat true. But think about it. Every day is white history day. Every channel on TV is white programming. Why are we better? Maybe once our country begins to live up to the diversity it says it has no one will need special days. Once the minorities are truly appreciated and equal, every day wil be full of white pride, black pride, purple pride, and everything else, and we wont need special days.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that?

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships you know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly-proclaimed Black-only Colleges in the US, yet if there were 'White-only Colleges' THAT would be a racist college. Once again with the minority issues... try being a minority. It sucks. There ARE a lot of racists out there still And when a minority student is in a room full or majority students with a majority professor, it is intimidating. Especially if that majority professr is racist. Demographics show that minorities also tend to be closer to the poverty level. So without scholarships many wouldnt be able to attend college at all. Less people in college = more people in the street. And we continue to aide stereotypes and keep populations divided.

In the Million-Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and red, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer who is running from the LAW and posing a threat to ALL of society, you call him a racist. OK, thats a slam and being stereotypical. Dont go listing all these bad things. There are plenty of white robbers, car-jackers, and shooters.

I am proud, but, you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists?

There is nothing improper about this e-mail. Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on..."

Right then. Its a tough call. I am kind of a nut politically. I never make much sense. I can totally see where the person who wrote this came from. But a lot of it is ignorance too. Its hard to know where other people are coming from when you havent been in their shoes.
I am a member of the white majority. But I also live in a community where the hispanic population is at 45% currently and growing. And I am a member of the gay minority. I know what its like to be on the outside.

Dont judge too quickly. Take the time to look at it from other peoples points of view.
